Catching Up With Aaron Braun

At the USA 5 km Championships in late September, Aaron Braun finished second in a very competitive field, showing he was back after being quiet for much of the second half of the 2013 racing season. After finishing fifth at the Olympic Track and Field trials in the 10,000m in 2012, Braun had high hopes of making Team USA this season, but it was not to be, finishing fifth in the 10k yet again. Refocusing his training, Braun is more driven than ever in pushing his limits and seeing just how fast he can run.

We caught up with Braun this week, talking about his recent USA 5 km Championship performance, his current training situation, his plans for the rest of the 2013 season and what the likelihood is he'll run a marathon sooner rather than later.

Scott Bush (SB): Congratulations on your big runner-up finish at the USA 5 km Championships. Having a fairly quiet 2013 racing season, what are your thoughts on your race?

Aaron Braun (AB): I was pretty happy about getting 2nd in the 5k. I knew that with the good field, it would be hard to get the win. I knew with Bumbalough coming off a long, succesful track season, and this being my first race back since taking a break after USAs and not having much speed work, I would have to go for the win by pulling away the last half mile. I went for it, but Andrew was able to stick with me, and kick by me the last 200. Overall I am still pleased with the race for the circumstances.

SB: You've been extremely quiet in 2013. How have things been going? What have you been up to?

AB: I haven't had the opportunity to run any US road championships until CVS. Like I told Chris (Nickinson) in my post race interview, this was mainly so that my main focus would remain on trying to make the world championship team in Moscow. Unfortunately, that didn't end up happening, but it was something I felt I had to try.

SB: How is training going now? What are you focusing on these last few months of the year?

AB: Training is going well right now. I feel like I am figuring out the nuances of training on my own, ans figuring out a new location in Denver. I will be doing a few more fun road races in October and November, and am hoping to get ready to make my marathon debut sometime in the winter or spring.

SB: What does your current coaching/training partner situation look like?

AB: I have returned to having my college coach Damon Martin coach me again. It has been a lot of fun to work with him again, and I trust him completely to help me improve to where I want to be, much like he did while I was at Adams State. I am doing the majority of training on my own, but will occasionally meet up with someone in town, or drive to Boulder for some company on a long run. It has been a big change to train on my own, and like many changes there are things that I really like about it, but also times when I miss having people to run with.

SB: What does Flagstaff mean to you and how difficult was the move to Denver?

AB: I am no longer living in Flagstaff, but that is definitely not because of anything to do with the town itself. My wife and I really enjoyed living in Flagstaff, and starting our family there over the last few years. It was a very tough decision to pick up and move here to Denver, but the combination of me making a coaching change, her being offered a new job, and being significantly closer to family was an opportunity we felt we couldn't pass up. Flagstaff will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we will look forward to any good chances to go back and visit the people and places that made it so great.

SB: Having some obvious success on the roads at the USA 5 km Championships, any chance we'll see you test the waters in longer road races later this fall or next spring?

AB: I do plan on doing longer races. I still really enjoy the shorter 5k/10k distances, so I don't think I'll ever stop doing those races, but I am looking forward to testing myself in longer distances. I know that I am capable of improving my half marathon pr, especially since I have only done two of them so far. I am also looking forward to the opportunity of finding out in the next year or two, whether I can be a good marathoner. I believe having no world championships in 2014 will give many track focused runners the opportunity to find that out.
