Webcast of .US Championships to provide top talent, technology

11/11/2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Innovation stands front and center at the .US National Road Racing Championships next weekend in Alexandria, Va., as USATF produces its most robust webcast for a USA Running Circuit (USARC) race.

The .US National Road Racing Championships are set to be broadcast live on USATF.tv on Sunday, Nov. 17, starting at 7 a.m. The webcast features a complex technological feed that will bring the race to USATF’s online platform with a first-rate broadcast team and TV-style graphics.

Fan favorites Tim Hutchings and Carrie Tollefson will provide commentary from Alexandria for the 12 km races on USATF.tv. A veteran of USATF’s track & field broadcasts, Hutchings is joined by Tollefson, an Olympian middle distance runner who has provided reporting at road races throughout the country.

To bring the .US Championships to road racing fans on a webstream, USATF has engaged LiveU in its broadcast production for USATF.tv. LiveU gives the production team the ability to capture live, wireless images at a fraction of the cost of conventional production equipment, while reducing labor and equipment. The logistical challenges inherent in road races, including moving vehicles and wide coverage areas, make technology vital.

“With the .US Championships being a stand-alone USA Championship event, it gave us an opportunity to be creative with our webcast,” said USATF Director of Entertainment Properties Adam Schmenk. “We are excited to have Tim and Carrie as our talent, and LiveU is providing the services we need to bring this race to life in real-time.”

Open to all runners of all abilities, the .US National Road Racing Championships will serve as the USA championship for elite and masters (40+) athletes, covering 12 kilometers. It will provide $100,000 in prize money to runners who have qualified for the race by placing in the top-ten at one of USATF’s USA Running Circuit (USARC) events. USARC races annually provide nearly $1 million in prize money to top U.S. road racers.

The event will also cater to fitness enthusiasts as well as weekend racers. Runners can chose from 12 km and 5km distances as well as a ½-mile kids’ fun run. A post-race festival in Oronoco Bay Park will feature awards, entertainment and refreshments.
